Greening a Rural School
Education Powered by the Sun: Solura Brings Energy Access to a Remote Primary School
Date of the project: Jan 6, 2025
Institution: Tumaini Primary School
Location: Mgeta, Morogoro region
Students: 218 pupils
The school relied on an old, noisy diesel generator that only operated for 3 hours a day — mostly for admin work. Classrooms had no light or fans, affecting afternoon sessions. Charging devices or using projectors was impossible, limiting digital learning.
Solution by Solura:
A tailored gridless micro-solar solution was proposed to support basic infrastructure and learning tools:
Component | Description |
SolarSmart Panels | 16 x 320W polycrystalline panels |
EcoReserve Battery | 4 x 5kWh modular batteries (expandable later) |
Hybrid Controller | Supports projector & multimedia use during school hours |
Security Setup | Solar lock enclosures and battery vault |
Implementation:
Stakeholder Engagement: Trained teachers on power use habits and system care
Solar Literacy Workshop: Conducted student-friendly energy awareness sessions
Timeline: 5 days from delivery to full activation
Results After 4 Months:
Classroom Access: Lighting and fans in 6 classrooms + staff room
Tech Upgrade: Projector use introduced for upper primary
Admin Support: Headmaster and secretary offices powered all day
Bonus: Solar-powered fridge for storing snacks and water
Sustainability Impact:
5.6 tons of CO₂ emissions offset (based on removed diesel generator)
“It’s more than power. Solura brought us opportunity — to modernize teaching and show our students that innovation belongs in rural areas too.”
